The 2016/2017 Irish Wheelchair Basketball Junior Blitz season concluded on May the 14th in Dundalk with a brilliant day of sport, skill and sportsmanship.
The season began in October and featured 8 rounds with teams from all over Ireland taking part. On the day itself North East Thunder, Killester, NI Knights, Swifts, Kingdom Wheelblasters and Rebel Wheelers all took part with Galway Speeders, Shannonside Stealers, Banner Spokes, Limerick and the Deise Dragons also having featured over the course of the season.
The junior blitz is a great example of inclusion where IWA members and their able bodied siblings play together. Generally, the format for each of the events involves all teams playing each other over the course of the day, with a final all stars game concluding the event.
Huge credit must go to each of the clubs who work tirelessly week in, week out, to grow the numbers and coach the game in such a positive manner. The ethos of fair play was very evident among all teams which is a testament to the work put in at club level. Huge congratulations must go to the players who took part over the course of the season; it has been wonderful to see the numbers grow over the past few seasons and we look forward to seeing them develop over the coming years.
Lastly a big thank you to the staff and volunteers who have dedicated huge time and effort, over the course of the season in a variety of functions, to deliver what is an exceptional junior programme.
