This weekend sees the preparations of our men’s wheelchair basketball senior team step up a gear for our upcoming participation at the European Championships in Sarajevo with a visit of the GB U23 team to compete for the Invacare Wheelchair Basketball Challenge Cup.
The GB team will visit in preparation for the 2017 U23 World Championships in Toronto, Canada.
The Irish team will use this competition as an opportunity to fine tune final preparations as they prepare for the European B Championships in Sarajevo from July 9th to 18th. Playing in a ten team competition Ireland will face France, Russia, Croatia and Slovenia to book a place in the knockout stages.
Whilst a younger outfit, the GB team has plenty of high level international competition experience and will provide stiff competition. Ireland have prepared well in the last number of months and whilst the focus will be on the Europeans a fortnight later, they will want to leave for that competition with confidence high.
The teams will play each other three times over the weekend but the headline event will be the Challenge Cup match at 6pm on Saturday evening in IWA Clontarf, which has been kindly sponsored by IWA-Sport sponsors Invacare Ireland.
Speaking about the event, Nicky Hamill, IWA Director of Sport said; “We’re delighted to welcome the GB U23 team for the inaugural Invacare Challenge Cup. This is an important weekend for both teams in terms of our respective preparations for the upcoming competitions. We’re also delighted that our long term supporters Invacare Ireland are sponsoring this event for what we hope will be an annual competition. I’d like to take the opportunity to welcome the general public to what promises to be an exciting match between two high quality teams”.
