IWA-Sport is delighted to host its first ever National Para Powerlifting Championships on Saturday the 24th of October, in the Elite Gym /Cork Weightlifting Club, Cork.
Para Powerlifting has been steadily developing as a sport in Ireland in recent years. Roy Guerin was the sole Irish competitor at the London Paralympic Games and since then the numbers have increased at both junior and senior level. The natural progression to further support the growth of the sport is to schedule a National Championships annually which aligns with our National championship programme in our other sports such as Athletics, Swimming and Wheelchair Basketball (cup and league).
In tandem with the National Championships, and with the aim of increasing the knowledge base of the sport in Ireland, a para powerlifting workshop will be delivered by IPC Chairman Mr Jon Amos on the same morning.
It is important that a number of people and organisations are thanked for their continued support of Irish para powerlifting. Colin o Shaughnessy at the Elite Gym, Michael O Leary from the Cork Weightlifting Club, and Colin Buckley also from Cork Weightlifting club and the representative from Eleiko who have supported our programme with facility and equipment sponsorship. This support is hugely appreciated and making a hugely positive contribution to the continued development of the sport.
