The Countdown is on to the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports (IWAS) Youth World Games which will take place in Athlone from July 2nd to 5th.
The IWAS Youth World Games offers young athletes a biennial multi-sport Games and provides athletes with their first taste of competition against their international counterparts. The Games sustain the ongoing growth of young athletes with a physical disability worldwide, promoting their development in sporting pathways in the Paralympic movement. Athletes between the ages of 14 and 23 years of age will compete in Swimming, Table Tennis and Track and Field from Tuesday the 3rd until Thursday the 5th July.
Nicky Hamill, Director of Sport at IWAS Member, IWA-Sport said, “We are delighted to welcome the IWAS Youth World Games to Athlone here in Ireland this summer. The IWAS Games serve as an important stepping stone in the development of young athletes and we look forward to working closely with IWAS to ensure they are delivered to the highest possible standard. We’re looking forward to welcoming the many teams from all over the World who will enjoy the superb facilities and hospitality that Athlone has to offer.”
IWAS President, Rudi Van Den Abbeele said, “The second edition of the then-called IWAS Junior World Games was hosted in Ireland in 2006 so it is fantastic for the Games to return for the 12th edition this year. Ireland have always been great supporters of the IWAS World Games programme and with the full support of our Member in Ireland, IWA-Sport, we are confident the IWAS Youth World Games 2018 will be a great success and continue the sporting pathway the Games provide internationally.”
Crucial to the success of the Games is the support of the official Games partners; Teleflex and Bus Eireann.
Based locally in Athlone, Teleflex is a global provider of medical technologies designed to improve the health and quality of people’s lives. The IWAS Youth World Games coincides with the 75th anniversary of Teleflex where staff will support the Games across a number of roles and functions.
“The IWAS Youth Games provides talented young people from across the globe with the opportunity to participate in their chosen area of sporting excellence. Teleflex is very proud to be an Official Partner of these games. Through sponsorship and the assistance of our staff during this event we are ready to play a part in ensuring these Games will be a great success.” said Monika Vikander Hegarty Vice-President HR International & Global Talent Development for Teleflex.
Bus Éireann will support the Games by providing transport. This is a comprehensive logistical exercise involving airport transfers and daily venue shuttles. “Bus Éireann, with the largest network of transport across Ireland, are delighted to be a partner to the IWAS Youth World Games. As the official transport provider we look forward to welcoming athletes on-board our hi-spec Expressway coaches, for their journeys to and from Dublin Airport. In Athlone we will run shuttles between the sports venues and athletes’ accommodation for the duration of the games.
