2017 / 2018 Irish Wheelchair Basketball Season commences
The Irish Wheelchair Basketball season tips off this weekend with the opening round of the senior league taking centre stage in IWA HQ at Clontarf. The upcoming season will see 9 teams compete, one less than last year, with the withdrawal of Shannonside Stealers.
NI Knights from Belfast are the reigning league champions and like last season Killester and Clonaslee will be expected to push them all the way for the honours this season.
The Basketball Ireland Cup draw will also be made this Saturday, with teams vying to qualify for Basketball Irelands showpiece event at the end of January.
The junior programme begins the following day, on Sunday 1st October also in Clontarf with teams from all over Ireland once again due to take part.
This has been a hugely popular and successful programme to date and it provides an important competitive outlet for our young players in their development.
The 2017/2018 season will also see the introduction of an emerging talent U23 programme. The purpose of this programme will be to expose players between the ages of 13 and 23 to high level training and competition with a view to progression onto the first ever National U23 team.
